The five settings I change in every new mobile game

April 15, 2026 · Marta Novak

Most mobile games ship with defaults aimed at making a trailer look flashy, not at making your actual phone happy. I've started treating the settings menu as step one before I even play. Here's what I look for.

First, the frame rate cap. If there's a 30/60 toggle, 30 is often worth it on anything but a flagship, especially for RPGs and racers. You lose a little smoothness and gain a lot of battery and heat relief.

Second, control layout. Any game that lets you reposition or resize buttons is a game that respects your hands. I nudge the main action button toward my thumb and breathe a sigh of relief.

Third, text size, fourth, motion blur, and fifth, background animation. Larger text saves squinting, motion blur is usually just a battery tax, and reduced animation smooths out menu-heavy games. Spend two minutes here and the first hour feels completely different.
